Jean-François Fouilhoux is a French sculptor and ceramicist. Introduced to ceramics in his adolescence by Daniel Cadot, he continued his training at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, from which he graduated at the age of 20. A decisive turning point in his career came in 1969 during a visit to the Guimet Museum: the sight of an ancient Chinese vase adorned with a tiger in relief, ≪ coated in celadon ≫, became for him a revelation regarding the very nature of ceramics as ≪ molten rock ≫. In 1976, he set up his studio in Mont-près-Chambord, in the Blois region, where he began by producing functional pieces to ensure his financial independence before devoting himself fully to his artistic exploration. In 1985, he invented a unique sculpting technique using a flexible metal blade to carve blocks of soft clay, creating vivid and turbulent reliefs that contrast with the softness of the glazes. The following year, a chance weighing error led him to discover the secret of a satiny, translucent celadon – a legendary material to which he has devoted his entire creative energy for over thirty years. His recent work has evolved into an exploration of the ‘form of the void’, where the sculpture becomes a thin wall enclosing space, like a radiant skin around an absent body. Winner of a gold medal in Munich in 1980 and the prize from the Chambre Syndicale des Céramistes in Vallauris in 1982, his works are now featured in numerous prestigious collections around the world, notably at the National Ceramics Museum in Sèvres, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris and the Museum of Art & Design in New York.
