Born in 1985 in Rhode Island, Brian Rochefort is a ceramic sculptor living and working in Los Angeles. His work gives rise to objects that evoke otherworldly landscapes through their organic forms and vibrant textures, inspired by his travels to remote regions – the Amazon rainforest, the Galápagos Islands, Bolivia and Africa – and in particular by his discovery of the Sierra Negra volcanic crater. His approach blends creation and destruction: starting with raw clay, he layers dyes and glazes, shatters his pieces repeatedly and then meticulously reassembles them, before finishing them with an airbrush using techniques he has developed himself. His sculptures, with their striking chromatic surfaces, evoke underground caves and marine environments, and draw inspiration from pioneers such as Ron Nagle and Ken Price, as well as abstract artists like Joan Mitchell and Franz West.A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA (2007), he undertook the Archie Bray Foundation’s Lillian Fellowship residency in 2009. His first solo museum exhibition, ≪ Absorption by the Sun ≫, was presented in 2019 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara. His work has also been exhibited at the New National Museum of Monaco, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Everson Museum of Art.
