Based in Paris between the two world wars, Mané-Katz was part of a generation of artists from Eastern Europe who contributed to the visual arts movement known as the École de Paris. Although influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, Mané-Katz’s art is quintessentially Expressionist. He focuses on the deepest, sometimes impenetrable aspects of the human soul. His favourite themes are linked to Jewish culture. His painting is imbued with religious and spiritual elements and constitutes the world that Mané-Katz has immortalised in his work.
