Description
BARBEY D’AUREVILLY (Jules). Une vieille maîtresse. Paris, Alexandre Cadot, 1851. 3 volumes in-8, brown percaline Bradel binding, plain spine, red title label, untrimmed (Pierson). First edition of the correct date of this ‘very important and extremely rare work, with the 1851 titles’ (Carteret). It was reissued under different titles in 1852 and 1853.
The author’s first major novel, *Une vieille maîtresse*, which boldly tackles infidelity and lies in love, caused a scandal, as Barbey had published *Les Prophètes du passé* in the same year, a work imbued with a demanding piety. The sincerity of the writer’s faith was then strongly called into question. The 1858 edition, somewhat expurgated, contains a defence by the author in the new preface.
An attractive copy, with generous margins, bound in period percaline signed by Pierson.
Lacks the errata sheets for the three volumes, which were printed later and are very often missing. A minor tear to one endpaper, very slight rubbing.
Carteret, I, 105 – Clouzot, 37.
