Description
BARBEY D’AUREVILLY (Jules). *Les Diaboliques*. Paris, E. Dentu, 1874. 12mo, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, decorated spine, gilt head (later binding). A sought-after first edition.
Five of the six short stories published in this famous collection are entirely unpublished. Only *Le Dessous de cartes d’une partie de whist* had previously appeared, in 1855, in *L’Ensorcelée*, under the title *Ricochet de conversation*.
The print run totalled 2,200 copies, of which 480 were destroyed by the author and the publisher due to legal proceedings brought by the Seine Public Prosecutor’s Office. In bookshops, fuelled by the scandal, the book sold out in four days. It was not printed on large-format paper.
A first-printing copy in a very well-executed binding, though unsigned, without the cover.
Minor scuffing on the upper hinge.
