BAUDELAIRE (Charles). *Les Fleurs du Mal*. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1857. In-12, brown half-maroquin with corner pieces, richly decorated spine, gilt head, untrimmed (R. Raparlier). A rare and highly sought-after first edition, printed in a run of 1,300 copies (including 200 proof copies) on Angoulême vellum paper, plus some twenty copies on large-format Holland paper presented to the author. Following the famous trial which led to six plays being placed on the Index, the bulk of the edition—which had been in circulation for six weeks—had already sold out, and only some 230 copies remained in stock, from which the offending plays had to be removed. A very complete copy of the condemned plays. The extremely rare error on p. 12 (‘s’enhardissent’ for ‘s’enhardissant’), the only note in the first printing, is corrected here, as is almost always the case. This copy features the other usual errors: ‘Feurs du Mal’ in the running title on pp. 31 and 108, p. 45 paginated as 44, ‘captieux’ for ‘capiteux’ on p. 201, etc. A superb copy in a quasi-contemporary binding, produced by Raparlier around 1870. Romain Raparlier settled in Paris around 1855 and practised until around 1880. His address at the time was 12 Rue Gozlin, where he set up shop around 1870. He was highly regarded, particularly by Anatole France, who praised him in 1874 in *Le Livre du bibliophile*. Very rare in such fine condition.
