Description
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Richard Wagner and Tannhäuser in Paris. Paris, E. Dentu, 1861. In-12, paperback, publisher’s printed cover, untrimmed, with a slipcase and green embossed half-cloth cover. First edition of this ‘very rare pamphlet’ (Carteret). Baudelaire’s last major critical work, *Richard Wagner and *Tannhäuser* in Paris*, revisits the smear campaign that led to the German master’s opera being taken off the bill after only three performances. Wagner himself, in a letter dated 15 April 1861, told Baudelaire that he had ‘felt intoxicated whilst reading these beautiful pages which told [his] story, just as the finest poem does’. A well-preserved copy as published. Spine slightly cracked. Clouzot, 44 – Carteret, I, 127.
