[BURTY (Philippe)]. Catalogue of the paintings by Mr Théodore Rousseau exhibited at the Cercle des arts. Paris, L’Académie des bibliophiles, 1867. – BURTY (Philippe). Ancient and Modern Cloisonné Enamels. Paris, Martz, n.d. [1868]. Two works in a single in-12 volume, red half-shagreen with corner pieces, spine decorated with gilt and blind-stamped lines and dots, gilt initials ‘E. H.’ at the tail, gilt head (contemporary binding). First editions of these two rare booklets by Philippe Burty (1830–1890), art critic, lithographer and collector, who was one of the earliest advocates of the Impressionists and who contributed to the emergence of Japonism, as well as to the revival of etching and the illustrated book. His essay on Théodore Rousseau (1812–1867) is followed by a catalogue of 109 studies and works by the painter exhibited at the Cercle des Arts a few months before his death. The study on *Les Émaux cloisonnés*, commissioned from Burty by the Parisian jeweller Martz, is illustrated with four separate chromolithographs by Louis-Pierre-Guillaume Régamey and fourteen sketches within the text, inspired by Japanese art, drawn by his son Félix Régamey. An autograph letter signed by Philippe Burty to Théophile Gautier (1811–1872), dated 1867, on the half-title page of the *Notice sur Théodore Rousseau*. In his art criticism, Gautier repeatedly came to the defence of the Barbizon landscape painter, who had long been ‘rejected’ by the official Salons (see the entry he devoted to him in his *Histoire du romantisme*, 1874, pp. 231–239). It is also rather intriguing to find the name of the poet of *Émaux et camées* in a volume devoted to artistic enamelling. The initials ‘E. H.’ on the spine of the volume have not been identified. They could refer to the painter and engraver Edmond Hédouin, to whom Burty had given his own copy of *Émaux cloisonnés*, filled with original drawings, which later passed into the collections of Samuel P.
