Description
CHARRIÈRE (Isabelle de). Sir Walter Finch and his son William. Geneva, J. J. Paschoud, 1806. In-12, lemon-coloured morocco, wide border of gilt fillets and scrolls, spine decorated with a dotted pattern, interior lace, gilt edges (Bozerian the Younger). Rare first edition.
This novel, written in 1799 but published posthumously, recounts, in the form of a diary, the upbringing of a young boy by a father committed to the ideas of the Enlightenment. It was published under the supervision of Henri Villemin, a professor of literature from Neuchâtel.
Isabelle de Charrière (1740–1805), née Belle van Zuylen, grew up in Holland, near Utrecht, in a family of the enlightened aristocracy. Married to a gentleman from Vaud, Charles-Emmanuel de Charrière de Penthaz, she subsequently lived in Colombier, near Neuchâtel, where she held a salon. A musician and composer, she produced a recognised body of literary work in French, comprising novels, short stories, plays, essays and a wealth of correspondence (notably with Benjamin Constant). A pioneering thinker, she was critical of aristocratic privileges and moral conventions.
