Description
CONQUE (La). Paris, 1891. 11 instalments in one in-8 volume, mustard-coloured morocco, gilt fillets on the covers, decorated ribbed spine, gilt head, covers, slipcase (Patrice Goy). A precious and very complete set of the 11 instalments that make up the literary journal founded by Pierre Louÿs at the age of 21. Despite his youth, he published works by Mallarmé, Moréas, Leconte de Lille, Maeterlinck and even Verlaine—including previously unpublished poems—as well as up-and-coming poets such as Valéry and Gide... Announced as a series of 12 instalments, this journal ran to only 11 issues, as Félicien Rops never completed the frontispiece that had been announced for the twelfth instalment. The set is otherwise complete, including the supplement and the announcement leaflet. One of the 20 special copies printed on Japanese paper, never released for sale. It bears a violet ink endorsement by Pierre Louÿs in the first issue. A very fine copy, containing a draft letter and a handwritten letter signed by Louÿs, mounted on a tab, relating to the journal and perhaps addressed to its printer.
