FLAUBERT (Gustave). Madame Bovary. Provincial Life. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1857. 2 in-12 volumes, black half-basane, decorated spines (contemporary binding). First edition. This copy presents a curious hybrid: it contains the titles from the first issue, published in April, with ‘Translation and reproduction reserved’ (which would become ‘Reproduction and translation rights reserved’ in the second issue). The copy then contains the text of the second issue, published in June, with the two corrections in the dedicatory epistle: the name ‘Senard’ correctly spelt, and the final words: ‘ni de votre dévouement’ changed to ‘et de votre dévouement’, as well as various other corrections detailed by Dumesnil and Demorest; notably, pages 50 and 67 are now paginated. Bindings slightly rubbed; hinge split on the second volume.
