Description
HUGO (Victor). Ode on the Birth of His Royal Highness the Duke of Bordeaux, followed by an ode on the Death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Berri. Paris: A. Paris, Pélicier, 1821. 2 leaflets of 14 and 8 pp. in one in-8 volume, blue long-grain half-maroquin with corners, plain spine with decoration, untrimmed, original blank covers preserved (Noulhac). First commercial editions of these ‘most rare little works’ (Clouzot), among the earliest publications by Victor Hugo, then aged eighteen and nineteen.
Inspired by the dynastic events of the Restoration, they commemorate the death of Charles-Ferdinand d’Artois and celebrate the birth and baptism of his posthumous son, Henri d’Artois, known as ‘the miracle child’. The success of these occasional odes earned Hugo early official recognition; they were subsequently included, with variations, in the *Odes et poésies diverses* of 1822.
A very fine copy in perfect condition. The original green covers of both booklets have been carefully preserved.
