‘The Belgian edition, rarer than the Paris edition, appeared a few days before the latter’ (Clouzot). This is the edition that Hugo regarded as the first edition and for which he meticulously corrected all the proofs.
All volumes except the fourth bear a fictitious reference to the 3rd, 4th or 6th edition.
