Written in exile, this baroque novel is an act of rebellion that influenced Lautréamont and Rimbaud. In it, Hugo takes his social criticism further than he had ever dared before: ‘The paradise of the rich is made from the hell of the poor.’ The work went unnoticed and was a failure. Numerous stage productions and adaptations for film and comics bear witness to its rehabilitation.
