Description
HUGO (Victor). [Works]. National Edition. Paris, J. Lemonnyer, G. Richard and later Émile Testard, 1885–1895. 43 quarto volumes, in blue half-shagreen with corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with blind-stamped fillets, untrimmed, cover (contemporary binding). A monumental collective edition, known as the ‘national’ edition, the publication of which began in the year of Hugo’s death.
The illustrations comprise over 200 printed plates on separate sheets and numerous etched vignettes after Bracquemond, Flameng, Giacomelli, Henner, Jeanniot, Laurens, Luc-Olivier Merson, Rochegrosse, Rodin, etc.
One of the 250 first-edition copies on Japanese paper, with a double set of the inset etchings, both before and including the letter (no. 240), but without the set of pure etchings reserved for the first 50 copies.
Slight discolouration on the spines of a few volumes.
