Description
[JANIN (Jules)]. *The Dead Donkey and the Woman Guillotined*. Paris, Baudouin, 1829. 2 volumes in one in-12 volume, red half-calf, plain spine with decoration, speckled edges (contemporary binding). A rare and sought-after first edition of Jules Janin’s first novel, ‘a sort of bizarre novel that gleefully piles up horrors’ (Carteret). It is a parody of the Gothic and terrifying novels brought back into fashion by the fervent Romantics. The work was reprinted several times between 1830 and 1865. Two lovely vignettes by Devéria, wood-engraved by Porret, adorn the title pages. Stamp of a reading room in Grenoble. Scattered stains and foxing. A corner of a table leaf is missing and there is a small marginal tear on the first two leaves of the second volume. Bindings slightly rubbed, one corner broken. Vicaire, IV, 518 – Carteret, I, 448 – Aron & Espagnon, no. 1721.
