LAUTRÉAMONT. *Les Chants de Maldoror*. Paris and Brussels, n.p. [Jean-Baptiste Rozez], 1874. 12mo, black half-maroquin with corner pieces, spine decorated with embossed panels, cover (Alix). First edition. The first canto had been published separately in the autumn of 1868; the other five are unpublished. A copy from the second print run, as is almost always the case, since only half a dozen copies dated 1869 are known to exist. The edition was printed in 1869, but Albert Lacroix, its publisher, did not put it on sale for fear of censorship. Only a handful of copies were bound in paperback and given to the author, who was to die within the following weeks. The remaining stock was acquired by the Tarbes-based publisher Jean-Baptiste Rozez, who was based in Belgium, and put back on sale in 1874 under a new title and with a new cover. The collection met with no success, however, and the print run was stored in Rozez’s cellars until 1885, when Max Waller, editor of *La Jeune Belgique*, sparked an initial wave of interest in Lautréamont, before the Surrealists went on to claim *Les Chants de Maldoror* as one of the movement’s precursor works.
