Description
LOTI (Pierre). *The Story of a Spahi*. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1881. In-12, Jansenist midnight blue morocco, garnet morocco linings edged with gold fillet, blue silk endpapers, double endpapers, edges gilt on endpapers, cover, slipcase and case lined with the same morocco (Cretté). First edition. *Le Roman d’un Spahi* is the first work published by Loti under his pen name, having previously published *Aziyadé* and *Rarahu* in 1879 anonymously. It was not printed in large-format paper. An autographed copy sent by the author to Alphonse Daudet: ‘with much affection and admiration’, signed ‘J. Viaud’ and dated 15 September 1882. From the libraries of Alphonse Daudet (1941, no. 101, bound in violet half-percale), Égide Bouchez, with bookplate, and Xavier de Planhol, with bookplate.
