Description
LOTI (Pierre). *Mon Frère Yves*. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1883. In-12, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, decorated spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine (Huser). First edition on publishing paper. A copy belonging to Anatole France, bearing the publisher’s stamp and a handwritten name on the half-title page. It is accompanied by an autograph letter signed by the author (3 pp. in -12 format mounted on a tab, in brown ink), in which Loti responds with ironic kindness to a young writer whom he seems to know and who has submitted a manuscript to him: ‘… the general premise of your story does not strike me as very plausible. A seasoned sailor does not die of love amidst the changing landscapes and sunshine. I am well placed to tell you this from experience. But that will not prevent your book from being a success; on the contrary, it will appeal more to women…”. He thanks him for enquiring after Yves and adds: “And your brother, has he written to you?”. From the collections of Charles Hayoit (2001, III, no. 524) and Xavier de Planhol, with bookplates.
