*Le Roman d’un enfant* is ‘the dramatised and inevitable story of a sailor’s calling ’ (Alain Quella-Villéger), that of Julien Viaud (1850–1923), alias Pierre Loti, who recounts his childhood in this autobiographical work. Included is an autograph letter from the author as a child, signed ‘Julien’: ‘Dear Sister, You ask me for details about my stay in Saint Georges. Bébé and I had great fun; but we weren’t always happy when it was time to go for a swim […]. ” (2 pp., in-12; tear in the fold).
