Description
LOTI (Pierre). *Fantôme d'Orient*. Paris: Calmann-Lévy, 1892. In-12, orange half-maroquin with corner pieces, decorated spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover (Semet & Plumelle). First commercial edition of this novel, the original edition of which had been printed in a run of only 20 copies.
A copy belonging to Pierre Louÿs, bearing his signature on an endpaper.
It subsequently belonged to Claude Farrère, who left this handwritten comment: ‘Pierre Louÿs loved only old books.’ One day I was surprised to discover a copy of *Le Fantôme d’Orient* in his library… Astonished, I asked him why. ‘Because this masterpiece is neither modern nor old, but eternal.’ I share this view entirely.
The author of *Les Civilisés* subsequently presented this volume to the bookseller and collector Richard Anacréon, with a handwritten note in which he refers to the *Vautour*, a squadron destroyer on which he served in 1902–1903, whilst Loti was its commander.
A very fine copy, accompanied by a 4-page autograph letter signed by Pierre Louÿs to Farrère, dated by the latter 26 December 1921.
