LOTI (Pierre). *Les Désenchantées*. A novel set in contemporary Turkish harems. Paris, Calmann Lévy, [1906]. In-12, unbleached paperboard box, triple gilt rule, gilt ‘Sursum’ ex-libris in the top right-hand corner of the front cover, gilt spine, gilt interior edging, gilt head, slipcase and case (contemporary binding). First edition, featuring a portrait of Loti based on a photograph.
One of 25 special copies printed on imperial Japanese paper.
A precious copy presented by Pierre Loti to Nouriyé Sursum de Châteauneuf.
The latter, granddaughter of the Count of Châteauneuf who converted to Islam under the name Rechad Bey, is one of the ‘disillusioned’ characters in the novel: Mélek. Loti met her in 1904, along with her sister Zennour and a certain Leyla (renamed Zeyneb and Djenaré in the novel). They confided in the author of *Aziyadé* about their lot as Turkish women so that he might turn their story into a book. Nouriyé and her sister fled the harem in January 1906 and lived for a time with Pierre Loti.
