Description
NERVAL (Gérard de). *Les Filles du Feu*. Paris, Giraud, 1854. In-12, green half-calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt and blind-stamped bands, smooth edges (contemporary binding). First edition of Nerval’s most important collection, published whilst he was a patient at Dr Blanche’s clinic in Passy, a few months before his suicide. The work is dedicated to Alexandre Dumas. It was not printed on large-format paper.
‘It was in this rare volume that a little masterpiece, *Sylvie*, first appeared,’ writes Carteret. It also contains six other short stories: ‘Angélique’, ‘Jemmy’, ‘Octavie’, ‘Isis’, ‘Corilla’ and ‘Émilie’, as well as the poetic cycle *Les Chimères*, which includes the famous sonnet ‘El Desdichado’.
A fine copy, bound in contemporary binding.
