RENARD (Jules). *Poil de Carotte*. Paris, Ernest Flammarion, n.d. [1894]. 12mo, dark green half-shagreen, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine (contemporary binding). First edition of the author’s masterpiece, of which only 15 extremely rare copies were printed on Holland paper.
Copy on publication paper (slightly yellowed), complete with cover.
Autograph dedication signed by Jules Renard: ‘A copy for Fernand Vandérem, author of *La Cendre*, a most brilliant book. From a sceptical but loyal friend. [Novem]ber 1894.’
A playwright, novelist and literary critic, Fernand Vandérem (1864–1939) remains famous as a theorist of bibliophilia and editor of the *Bulletin du bibliophile*. This copy is described in the catalogue of his sale (1940, II, no. 996).
It is accompanied by two autograph signed letters from Jules Renard, including a long letter to André Antoine, the founder of the Théâtre Antoine, who successfully staged the play *Poil de Carotte* in 1900.
