Description
WILDE (Oscar). The Picture of Dorian Gray. Paris, Albert Savine, 1895. In-12, grey half-percaline Bradel binding, cover (contemporary binding). First edition of the first French translation of Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece, published four years after the original English edition. Stuart Mason attributes it to Eugène Tardieu and Georges Maurevert.
It was not printed on high-quality paper. This copy bears a ‘third edition’ note on the cover; the copy held by the BnF bears a ‘second edition’ note.
A very rare and charming autograph dedication signed by Oscar Wilde, in French, to Robert Scheffer.
Robert Scheffer (1863–1926), a poet, short-story writer and literary critic, born in Colmar, frequented occult circles in his youth and served as secretary to the Queen of Romania between 1886 and 1891. He is notably the author of the novels *Le Prince Narcisse* (1897) and *Le Palais de Proserpine* (1901).
The closing remark in the dedication, referring to the ‘abominable and grotesque’ French translation of *The Picture of Dorian Gray*, is particularly delightful.
Spine worn, foxing.
