No place, no date [Paris, Éric Losfeld, 1959–1960]. 2 square in-12 volumes, in grey Jansenist morocco, smooth spine with title running lengthwise, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine (contemporary binding). One of the masterpieces of erotic literature.
Complete first edition of both parts, published clandestinely by Éric Losfeld, without the author’s or publisher’s name. The print run is believed to have been limited to 1,000 copies.
The novel was subsequently republished under the pseudonym Emmanuelle Arsan, behind which lies Marayat Bibidh, a young Franco-Thai woman, who co-wrote it with her husband, the French diplomat Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andrianne.
*Emmanuelle*, reissued and translated into several languages, enjoyed worldwide success thanks to Just Jaeckin’s film adaptation, released in 1974 and which remained in cinemas for ten years. Forty years later, Marayat and Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andrianne’s erotic novel was adapted for the screen once again, this time by Audrey Diwan, with the film released in cinemas on 25 September 2024.
