Published against a backdrop of enthusiasm for African art, which reached its peak with the 1925 Decorative Arts Exhibition and the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, this African anthology, centred on oral literature, is a collection of tales and proverbs that Blaise Cendrars gathered through his reading and published ‘as the missionaries and explorers brought them back to us in Europe’.
