Claudel composed this collection of prose poems between 1895 and 1899, whilst he was making several visits to Shanghai, Fuzhou and Hankou in his capacity as manager of the vice-consulate and consul. These meditative texts describe the beauties of Chinese culture: gardens, theatre, ideograms, exotic trees, animals, landscapes, etc.
