Description
GENET (Jean). *Pompes funèbres*. Published in Bikini [Paris], at the expense of a few enthusiasts [Gaston Gallimard and Robert Chatté], 1947. Large 8vo, paperback, covered with a title label and decorated in black ink, untrimmed, in slipcase. First edition, published clandestinely by Gaston Gallimard, of this ‘horrific and magnificent love story, written to commemorate the death, during the Liberation of Paris, of the young Resistance fighter Jean Décarnin, who was Jean Genet’s lover ’ (Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques, p. 411).
Printed in a run of 495 copies; this is one of the 470 printed on pure-fibre Lana vellum (unnumbered).
A remarkable copy, featuring a beautiful autograph dedication signed by the author across a double page (recipient’s name erased), bound in a filled cover entirely decorated in black ink – no doubt by Genet himself.
A circumflex accent has been added to the author’s name on the title page, as is often the case.
