Description
JACOB (Max). *Le Cornet à dés*. No place, no date [Paris, printed by Levé, 1917]. In-8, anthracite half-maroquin with corners, plain spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine, edged slipcase (Semet & Plumelle). First edition of Max Jacob’s masterpiece, published at the author’s own expense and printed in a small run. It was not distributed through bookshops, but by subscription.
*Le Cornet à dés* is an inventive collection of three hundred meditative prose poems and aphorisms, almost all composed between 1903 and 1910, the sequence of which Max Jacob himself described as a Cubist work. His preface is one of the most famous manifestos on prose poetry in modern poetry.
Autograph dedication signed by the author: ‘To Mr Charles Malexis, assuring him of my warmest regards.’ Max Jacob, 17 rue Gabrielle, 18th arrondissement.
A press magnate and publisher, Charles Malexis (1879–1959) was editor-in-chief of the newspapers *La Vie aérienne illustrée*, *La Baïonnette* (to which Apollinaire contributed), *Ève*, *Minerva*, *Rêves*, etc., and was head of *Édition française illustrée* and *La Banderole*.
