PROUST (Marcel). *Les Plaisirs et les jours*. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1896. In-4, Lavallière morocco, decorated with white honeysuckle and small green leaves in a mosaic pattern on the covers, and a pattern of circular fillets and cold-embossed interlacing, spine decorated in the same manner, ivory morocco linings, bronze moiré silk endpapers, edges gilt on endpapers, cover and spine, slipcase (Huser). First edition of the first work by Marcel Proust, then aged twenty-five.
This collection of short stories and prose poems includes a preface by Anatole France and the scores of four piano pieces by Reynaldo Hahn.
The volume is illustrated with 76 compositions by Madeleine Lemaire, including 14 inset plates on tinted paper. The famous watercolourist had introduced Reynaldo Hahn to Marcel Proust in May 1894.
One of the 20 first-edition copies on ‘Japon Impérial’ paper (no. 6), the first paper used before the 30 copies on ‘Chine’ paper, complete with the original signed watercolour by Madeleine Lemaire, which appears only in the first-edition copies on ‘Japon Impérial’ paper.
A perfect copy in a sumptuous binding by Huser.
One of the finest copies imaginable of this book, alongside that of Jacques Guérin bound by Charles Meunier (1986, IV, no. 99).
