Description
ROSTAND (Edmond). *L'Aiglon*. Paris, Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1900. In-8, green half-maroquin with corner pieces, gilt headband, untrimmed (Pagnant). First edition, featuring a frontispiece portrait of Sarah Bernhardt in stage costume by Louise Abbema. One of 180 copies on Japanese paper. Autograph dedication signed by Edmond Rostand to Germaine Deschanel: ‘To Madame Paul Deschanel, who perhaps, by atavism, has a taste for verse drama, I respectfully offer this drama in verse, dated February 1901 in Cambo (where Villa Arnaga is situated). At the time Edmond Rostand sent her this tribute, Germaine Brice de Ville (1876–1959), the granddaughter of the playwright Camille Doucet, had only just married Paul Deschanel, President of the Chamber of Deputies and future President of the Republic (in 1920): their wedding had taken place on 13 February 1901. From the G. and S. Batisse library, with bookplate. One hinge is cracked, minor flaws to the binding; the front cover is missing, whilst the back cover remains intact.
