ROSTAND (Edmond). *Chantecler*. Paris, Eugène Fasquelle, 1910. Large 8vo, supple sheepskin with embossed design, plain, unmarked spine, untrimmed, slipcase and cover bound in modern lemon-coloured morocco (publisher’s binding). First edition, printed in a run of 1,000 copies on Imperial Japan paper. It was published to mark the first performance of Rostand’s play on 7 February 1910 at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, with Lucien Guitry, Jean Coquelin, Félix Galipaux and Madame Simone in the leading roles. A facsimile of a watercolour by the author is reproduced on the half-title page. A very fine copy in its soft leather publisher’s binding designed by René Lalique. A personalised copy, printed for the actor Dauchy, who played the Peacock in the play, with a colophon and initialled by Eugène Fasquelle. Enclosed are two autograph letters concerning the genesis of *Chantecler*, addressed to Constant Coquelin, Rostand’s favourite actor: 1. an autograph letter from Edmond Rostand, dated Cambo, November 1904 (1 p. in-8); the author, ill and plagued by doubts, wishes to call it all off: ‘I do not wish to write this play. I have allowed myself to be influenced and persuaded for too long, and I have wasted the best years of my life needlessly returning to a task that I dislike […]. No, I shall not, under any circumstances, give you this play, which I do not wish to finish, for it would be monstrous if, for the sake of money, I were to have a poem performed that was written against my will [...]’. 2. a handwritten letter from Rosemonde Rostand, early 1904 (8½ pp. in-12 on mourning paper bearing the Etchegorria letterhead in Cambo-les-Bains), in which Mrs Rostand expresses concern about her husband’s health and the progress of *Chantecler*.
