Description
STERNBERG (Jacques). Geometry in the Impossible. No place, no date [1951]. Small square in-12 format, covers made of silver-coloured polymer imitating steel, decorated with various pieces of black, red and steel-coloured polymer laminated in relief; smooth spine in black leather with a silver patina; edge-to-edge linings in the same leather; endpapers in red nubuck; flap cover in the same black leather with a silver patina, lined with red nubuck, slipcase (F. Rousseau, 2017). An extremely rare first edition of Sternberg’s first book, self-published in a run of just 50 copies, mimeographed in white on black Canson paper on the front side of the leaves only.
This first edition is not held by the BnF or the CCFr.
According to the colophon, ‘this text was printed in an edition of 50 copies, numbered from 1 to 50, on behalf of an anonymous and entirely unknown publisher’; this copy bears the number 47. On the reverse of the fifth leaf, a second colophon states: ‘These lines were printed in an edition of twenty copies on 23 December 1951. Copy specially printed for [left blank].’ ”
An autograph copy signed by the author and sent to the artist Jean Martin-Bontoux (1927–2002).
