Rudolph Christopher TEGNER (1873–1950), published by La Stèle. Aphrodite’s Belt. 1924–1925.
A rare bronze cast with a brown patina by the publisher Arthur Goldscheider, holder of the ‘La Stèle’ stamp. 62 x 48 cm. Cast from a studio plaster model and one of the 14 bronze statues on display in the grounds of the Rudolph Tegner Museum.
A little-known mythological object, the belt of Aphrodite (or Venus) bestows upon its wearer an irresistible power of seduction.
Rudolph Tegner was born on 12 July 1873 in Copenhagen. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and deeply inspired by mythological subjects, he went on to become the leading figure of the Danish Art Deco period; his work is associated with the Symbolist movement.
A museum dedicated to him is located in Dronningmølle, near Elsinore in Denmark. The museum is built of reinforced concrete in an unusual modernist style, based on Tegner’s own plans and realised with the assistance of the architect Mogens Lassen (1901–1987).
From 1890 to 1893, Tegner collaborated with the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, before moving to Paris, where he remained until 1897 and was influenced by the art of Auguste Rodin. His dynamic and deliberately provocative, even erotic, sculptures broke with the reserved, neoclassical tradition of sculpture in Denmark.
