Description
A fine set of five mother-of-pearl tokens in a shuttle shape, richly engraved with the coat of arms of the Solar de Tejada, bearing the inscription on the reverse: ‘Blasón de los Cavalleros Infanzones Diviseros del mui noble y mui Ilustre Solar de Tejada’, meaning “Coat of arms of the Infanzones [Spanish lower nobility], entitled to the very noble and very illustrious Solar de Tejada”. It is surmounted by the family motto “Ecce beatificamus eos qui sustinuerunt”, meaning “Behold, we proclaim blessed those who have persevered” (a reference to the Epistle of St James, chapter 5, verse 11 of the Bible), the whole set within a border of blooming flowers. The reverse side bears the initials BSDV within a floral border. Dimensions 7.5 x 3.5 cm (Minor chips) Included are 3 octagonal mother-of-pearl tokens, some of which are engraved. Dimensions: 3.5 x 3.5 cm. As for the coat of arms, the shield is quartered and divided in the centre by a gold eight-pointed cross piercing the divisions. In the first quarter, which is vert, stand two open and openwork gold castillons gules, each surmounted by a silver banner bearing a solid cross gules. This motif gives way to the second quarter, azure, featuring two silver crescent moons, the whole magnificently accompanied by thirteen gold six-pointed stars arranged in an orle. Moving downwards, the third quarter, in silver, depicts a rampant lion in gules, both crowned, with a gold tongue and armed in gold, whilst the fourth quarter, also silver, features a green yew tree to whose trunk a black bear is chained by a gold chain. Finally, to complete this composition, the entire shield is encircled by a gold border bearing thirteen azure shells, each surmounted by a red St James’s cross-and-sword.
