Description
Elisabeth JOULIA (1925–2003). A large bottle-shaped vase with handles on the sides. Piece in pyrite stoneware with a black glaze and brown glaze runs. Similar in style to her works from the 1950s. Signed on the underside. Height 33 cm (Glaze defects, particularly at the base)
Originally trained in fresco painting, Elisabeth Joulia discovered ceramics whilst studying under Jean Lerat before settling in 1949 at La Borne, a centre for stoneware, where she went on to become one of its leading figures. Rejecting convention, she developed an instinctive and organic practice, based on working directly with the clay, modelled exclusively by hand. Her work embodies a sensitive abstraction, resonating with nature and the body, often the female form. Through her iconic series *Châtaignes*, *Eclosions* and *Amandes*, she explores the essence of form and life. From the 1970s onwards, her forms grew in scale and sensuality, before becoming more refined with the introduction of white stoneware. A leading figure in post-war ceramics, her work—nourished by spirituality and travel—strives towards the universal.
