Jean Chapin was a French painter and lithographer born in Paris, whose work was regularly exhibited at the major Parisian salons (a member of the Salon des Indépendants from 1919, the Salon d’Automne and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts). He trained at the École Boulle and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
His style is a subtle blend of Realism and Expressionism:
Style: His paintings are executed with vigour, employing a palette of muted yet vibrant colours (earthy tones, greys), creating a rich, modern texture. Gérald Schurr noted that his work evoked a “serious yet warm expressionism”.
Themes: Chapin is particularly renowned for his seascapes of Brittany and Normandy (Le Tréport, Île de Sein, Port en Bretagne). He excels at capturing the harshness of the sea, the light filtered through the clouds, and the melancholy of the settings, revealing a subtle unease in the face of nature’s power. He also produced nudes, still lifes, and scenes of Parisian streets.
His work is a valuable record of an era, combining a keen sense of reality with a powerful personal expression.
His works are listed or have been exhibited at:
Petit Palais (Paris) - (Historical exhibitions)
Rouen Museum of Fine Arts - (As an exhibitor with the Rouen School)
