Description
FREMIET Emmanuel (1824-1910) "Archange Saint Michel" Large bronze, shaded brown patina, signed, model created in 1875 and modified in 1897. Published by Barbedienne from 1910. Gilt bronze proof, signed, with the founder's mark "F. Barbedienne" on the rim. Marble base (a few small chips). 56 x 33 x 23 cm Emmanuel Frémiet was a Parisian sculptor who was both a nephew and pupil of Rude. He made his debut at the Salon with a "Gazelle", a plaster study. He went on to win numerous medals, and from then on was ranked among the master sculptors. Napoleon III commissioned a collection of statuettes of the various arms of the French army. Accustomed to animal subjects, "St Michel terrassant le dragon" (St Michael slaying the dragon) is a departure from the beaten track, revealing his academic concern for resemblance and appropriateness.
