CARRIER BELLEUSE Albert Ernest (1824-1887) "Mélodie" Large brown patina bronze subject representing a half-naked woman seated on a column and holding a harp. Signed. 80 x 35 x 44 cm Carrier-Belleuse, born in Anizy-le-Château on 12 June 1824 and died in Sèvres on 3 June 1887. A pupil of David D'Angers at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1840, he made his debut at the Salon in 1851 and made a name for himself with his group Salve Regina in 1861. In 1867, he was awarded the Salon's Medal of Honour for "The Messiah". He was one of the most prolific artists of the century and enjoyed the greatest success under the Second Empire, benefiting from the personal support of Napoleon III. His work was greatly influenced by the styles of the Italian Renaissance and the eighteenth century, which he helped to bring up to date. Attached to the Manufacture de Sèvres as director of works of art, he refined a technique that was both bold and delicate, as demonstrated by this large bronze "Mélodie" subject.
