Description
BERCHEM Nicolaes Petersz (1620-1683) "Shepherds leading a flock of sheep towards the plain". Graphite, black ink and grey wash 15.5 x20 cm on view. Signed and dated top right 1654. This drawing reflects his memories of his stay in Italy between 1651 and 1653. A drawing of the same period at the Dutch Institute. cf: catalogue of the exhibition of Dutch landscape drawings of the XVIIth century 1968-1969 N°7 plate 158. Expert: Mr Jean-Marie LE FELL, expert C.N.E. (38 rue de Trévise 75009 PARIS - 06.03.23.08.53. - [email protected]) Dutch painter, Nicolaes BERCHEM was a pupil of VAN GOYEN. After his time in this studio, he trained with J. B. Weenix, with whom he developed his marked taste for Italian landscapes. He therefore made several trips to Italy, notably between 1651 and 1553. His memories of this trip are well reflected in the painting Pâtres conduisant un troupeau de moutons vers la plaine ("Shepherds driving a flock of sheep towards the plain"). His influence on the painters of the early 18th century was considerable, and can be seen in both J. Vethagen and Pieter de Hooch.
