Description
BOGOLIOUBOV (BOGOLUBOFF) Alexei Petrovich (1824–1896) ‘Arcachon, boats on the beach’ Ink and wash drawing on paper mounted on board, signed lower right and dated, 11.8 x 20.2 cm, foxing.
A marine painter and etcher, BOGOLJUBOFF was born in Russia. He was educated at the Naval Cadet School in Saint Petersburg, then served as aide-de-camp to Admiral Dourassov (1779–1848). He began drawing at a young age whilst still a cadet. He was one of the naval officers who accompanied Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg on the Kamtchatka to Madeira in 1849. The Duke advised him to devote himself entirely to his art. He therefore enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1850. Later, his travels across Europe (Geneva, Paris, Italy) enabled him to develop his taste for seascapes. Appointed an academician in 1858 and a professor in 1861, his works are now held in major Russian and European museums.
