A painter and etcher baptised in Amsterdam, Adrien VAN DE VELDE established himself as a remarkable landscape painter. He also painted genre scenes, battle scenes and numerous portraits of fellow painters. Among them were Hobbema, Van der Heyden and Verboom. In order to perfect the anatomical details, the artist produced a series of studies from life, often using the same model. The study ‘Woman Seated on a Stone Wall’ is one such work from this series. Some of his similar works are now held at the Hermitage Museum, the British Museum and the Fodor Museum in Amsterdam.
