Description
VAN DE VELDE Adrien (1636–1672) Pastoral scene: a woman milking a cow. Brown pen and grey wash on paper, 9.8 × 15 cm Monogrammed and dated AVV 1663 Expert: Mr Jean-Marie LE FELL, C.N.E. expert (38 rue de Trévise, 75009 Paris – 06 03 23 08 53 – [email protected]) A painter and etcher baptised in Amsterdam, Adrien VAN DE VELDE established himself as a remarkable landscape painter. He also painted genre scenes, battle scenes and numerous portraits of fellow painters. Among them were Hobbema, Van der Heyden and Verboom. In order to perfect the anatomical details, the artist produced a series of studies from life, often using the same model. The study ‘Woman Seated on a Stone Wall’ is one such work from this series. Some of his similar works are now held at the Hermitage Museum, the British Museum and the Fodor Museum in Amsterdam. Further photographs available on request from the gallery ([email protected])
