(Typography) – JAMMES (Isabelle and André). Collection of type specimens. 1517–2004. Paris, Éditions des Cendres, 2006. Large quarto, 394 pp, [1 f], publisher’s hardback with illustrated dust jacket. A catalogue presented and compiled by Isabelle and André Jammes, booksellers in Paris. It offers, across 277 meticulously presented entries, a history of the evolution, distinctiveness and richness of all types of typefaces. It is superbly illustrated, often with full-page illustrations, in black and white and colour. The price list is attached on a loose leaf. Also included: - Specimens of typefaces by Firmin and Jules Didot. Preface by André Jammes. Paris, Éditions des Cendres, 2003. Folio size, title cover, preface, 16 pp: table of plates, 33 plates of typefaces and vignettes (including 19 double plates), all on loose sheets in a slipcase. The 1998 exhibition held in Paris: ‘Les Didot, trois siècles de typographie’ (The Didots: Three Centuries of Typography) brought to light a previously unpublished series of large-format sheets displaying typefaces and vignettes from the foundries of Firmin and Jules Didot. ‘The significance of Jules Didot’s contribution to the evolution of typographic style is revealed here for the first time’.
