A systematic and comprehensive catalogue of all periodical publications circulated in France from the origins of the newspaper to 1860. Text in two columns. Each newspaper cited is accompanied by a scholarly analysis. ‘This is a history of the French periodical press from 1631 to 1866. Newspapers and periodicals are listed alphabetically for the early press (1631–1788) and chronologically for the modern press (1789–1865). Each periodical is described and placed in its historical context through extensive commentary, as indicated by the title. The catalogue, which begins with a historical essay, concludes with an overview of the Parisian press in 1865 and an alphabetical index of titles.
