Description
(Typography) – Official Bulletin of Master Printers. 1925: The Ancestors of the Book, the Newspaper and the Almanac in France. 1926: The First Three Centuries of French Printing. 1927: An Illustrated History of Printing and the Book. 1930: Books in Their Natural Habitat: Libraries and Collectors’ Cabinets. 1935: A Chronology of the Graphic Arts: 5,000 Key Dates and Facts. Creators and Celebrities. Paris, 1925–1935. A set of five substantial quarto volumes, paperback, with illustrated covers. Each year, around Christmas, a Bulletin was published dealing with a theme relating to typography, the history of the book or bibliophilia. In the advertising section at the end of each volume, advertisers, printers and typographers, paper manufacturers, the École Estienne, various suppliers, etc. vied with one another in terms of the originality and richness of their colour schemes, layout, typography, paper quality, and the presentation of new techniques and machinery. The first of these bulletins appeared in 1912, the second in 1913, and it was not until 1922 that this publication resumed its normal schedule, only to be interrupted once again by another war. After the war, this journal reappeared under the title *Caractère*.
- *Caractère*. Christmas issues (special editions). The annual (!) of French print under the patronage of the Printing Federation. Christmas 1956. Christmas 1957. Christmas 1958. Christmas 1959. Paris, 1956–1959. 4 substantial in-4 volumes, in the publisher’s hardback with a decorated dust jacket. This magazine is every bit as good as the *Bulletin officiel des maîtres imprimeurs* published between the two world wars, in terms of the variety and originality of its numerous plates.
