HAMILTON (Count Antoine). Two works. 1/ *Les quatre Facardins*, a tale. Paris, Jean Fr. Josse, 1730. In-12, contemporary fawn calf, ribbed spine, upper cap torn off, corners worn, small wormhole on the spine, red edges. [2 ff.], 328 pp. First edition. A Scottish gentleman born in Ireland, Hamilton (1646–1720) became closely associated with the fortunes—often ill-fated—of the Stuarts and went into exile twice in France, where he died. He belongs to ‘that category of foreigners of great culture or finely versed in our literature, who, having written in French, are entitled to be regarded as excellent French writers’ (Dictionnaire des lettres françaises). His tales, which were not intended for publication, circulated in manuscript form at court and amongst literary circles. *Les quatre Facardins*, one of his most famous works, follows in the vein of *The Thousand and One Nights*, which had only just been discovered, whilst subtly mocking the pseudo-Oriental fantasy that was all the rage. 2/Mixed works in prose and verse.
