Description
[POREE (Abbé C.-G.), and DUDOUET (doctor)]. The Pros and Cons of the Possession of the Girls of the Parish of Landes, Diocese of Bayeux. In Antioch [Caen], Published by the Heirs of Good Faith. To the Truth. 1738. In-8, contemporary marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (rebuilt), blind-stamped fillet on the covers, upper joint split at the top, head cap restored, corners rubbed, water-stain on the first few leaves, modern ex-libris stamp on the flyleaf.
[2 ff.], 275 pp., [1 p.]. Third and most complete edition. The last case of possession to have taken place in Normandy. In 1732, rumours spread throughout Normandy of the possession of eight people from the parish of Landes, including the three daughters of the local lord, M. de Leaupartie. Porée and Dudouet studied similar cases of possession before turning their attention to the conduct of the parish priest of Landes, Heurtin, who was no stranger to cases of possession, having previously been suspended following the case of Maria Letoc, known as the ‘Saint of Evrecy’. They concluded that the outlandish readings and strange devotional practices had in fact led the penitent women’s imaginations astray.
