Description
GOIFFON (Joseph). Harmony of the Two Spheres, Celestial and Terrestrial, or the Art of Determining the Location, Route and Distance of All Parts of the Earth by Means of the Sun and the Stars. Paris, Le Mercier, 1739. In-4, XVI, 477, [11 pp]: table of contents, privilege and errata, contemporary brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red edges, corners worn, cap ends worn, tears at the top of the spine with small losses of leather. An old handwritten bookplate (1742) on the endpaper and title page. ‘This work,’ says Lalande, ‘contains elements of astronomy and geography, and chiefly a comparison of the declinations of the stars at various latitudes on Earth. The author was a rather rare example of a man with a taste for astronomy.’ (Quérard III, 399). A first edition appeared in 1731 in the in-12 format.
