In-8, loose-leaf, illustrated hardback with filled spine, slipcase, box. 297 pp., [1 f.], 42 woodcuts by Sylvain Sauvage (cover, title vignette and frontispiece coloured by stencil; 39 vignettes in the text), initials and tailpieces. A print run of 950 numbered copies on Lana vellum, cut to size. Tillier’s masterpiece is set during the reign of Louis XVI. His hero (Jacques Brel was a magnificent Benjamin in the film adaptation) is a libertarian doctor, bawdy and generous, always ready to sit down to a meal in good company and to rail against kings and nobles, the courts and all manner of nuisances.
